For the 11th year running, the Western Cape Provincial Treasury is offering bursaries to Grade 12 learners and post- and undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in Economics, Accounting, Finance and Auditing.

Applications are now open and David Maynier, the Provincial Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, is encouraging all ambitious, young people to seize this opportunity to apply for a bursary and, in turn, create opportunities to develop their skills, enter the job market with an advantage and pursue a better future.

“Through these bursaries, the Provincial Treasury aims to create a talent pool of young people with the right skills to fill in-demand positions while making tertiary studies more accessible and ensuring that more professionals are available to improve the financial well-being of Western Cape municipalities and provincial departments at the same time,” said Minister Maynier.

The Western Cape Provincial Treasury remains committed to improving education outcomes and creating opportunities for the youth living in the province by prioritising the education budget and investing in education infrastructure.

With an 81.5% matric pass rate in the Western Cape for 2018, and 42.3% of these students being eligible to study towards a bachelor degree, the province has many young people who face barriers to accessing to tertiary education, including, for example, financial barriers.

In 2008, the Provincial Treasury, as part of efforts to address the financial barriers facing prospective students, identified a skills shortage in the fields of Economics, Accounting, Finance and Auditing and launched a bursary programme to address these shortages by providing the youth in this province with the opportunity to access tertiary education.

To apply for a bursary, you must be between the ages 17 and 35, be in Grade 12 or a post- or undergraduate student, live in the Western Cape and plan to study full-time.
