Nedbank Bursary Awards: Western Cape Provincial Treasury congratulates winners of annual Essay Writing Competition

Provincial Treasury together with its partners (Western Cape Education and Nedbank), has for its 15th consecutive year, announced its winners of the annual awards ceremony held at the V&A Waterfront on 03 June 2023.

The WCG-Nedbank Essay Writing Competition, a flagship of public and private sectors working together to empower young people. Hailed for its 15th years, the competition awarded 14 bursaries to top performing finalist of the competition. Learners were tasked to analyse the economic implication of globalization and environmental degradation on the South African economy. 

The competition, not only aimed at warding bursaries, but also to inspire and attract prospective individual into the Finance, Economics Accounting and related fields, to address the skills shortages faced in the country. Hailed in her speech, Ms Shirley Robinson in the opening speech touted her admiration for South Africa in the thinking and work displayed by young people and future leaders despite bleak picture we experience in daily news. 

This year winners, Relebohile Moahloli from Klein Nederburg Secondary School was crowned top performer in the competition. Ms Moahloli enclosed the lesson she learnt, and experience of this competition was to “never doubt yourself” painting her ability to do great things when believing in oneself. In addition, all winners and finalists received cash prizes, the winner of the competition received a R10 000 cash prize, the second-place winner, R7500 and the third-place winner R5 000. The rest of the bursary winners and finalist each received R3 000.

Mr. Brent Walters, Head of department, WCED and Mr. David Savage, the Head official of Provincial Treasury among the dignitaries at the ceremony thanked and gave appreciation to all those involved in ensuring an exceptional and exciting day of recognition of the future leaders and changers of the Western Cape Province and the country. The ceremony touted the continuous commitment by competition partners, to supporting the educational initiatives for young people and providing them with the opportunity to question, challenge and succeed at the goals they have set out for themselves. We are excited to see the success of the bursary recipients in their current, planned and future endeavors.
