Minister Simmers welcomes similarities between his and CoCT Mayor Hill-Lewis budget votes

Less than 24 hours apart, the consistency in the two spheres of government’s intentions to expedite service delivery and build hope for its residents is evident for all to see. On Tuesday 28 March, the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, delivered his maiden budget speech for the department. With a central theme of “Building The New Hope”. On Wednesday 29th, his counterpart Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, likewise, presented his 2023/24 budget-themed “Building Hope”.

These budgets are not only similar in themes, but the similarities can also be found in the areas of priorities as tabled, respectively. The Provincial department’s strategy is underpinned by its 2050 Infrastructure Framework. This vision is to enable infrastructure-led growth and investment for the Western Cape that will benefit the communities it serves. Speaking on the similarities in their budget, Provincial Minister said: “it is encouraging to note the Local Government shares similar sentiments on the vision for building a thriving economy in the region and renewing the hopes of our citizens.”

Addressing the way forward the Minister said: “I look forward to engaging the Mayor and the City of Cape Town to build on our synergies that will ultimately benefit the citizens. This of course resonates with our operating model which is firmly based on partnerships and working together.”
