Learners at Prince George Primary School in Lavender Hill received a visit from their own Fairy Godmother.

Joellen Jacobs worked as a Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) Assistant at the school and helped learners with reading, mathematics and any extra support they required.

She is also a junior coordinator for an organisation called Fairy Godmother. The organisation aims to help girls with matric dance dresses, sanitary packs and emotional support.

Jacobs started a drive to collect sanitary pads and personal hygiene products for the learners at Prince George Primary. She managed to put together 120 gift packs via donations.

Before the handover, she gave an informative talk to the Grade 4 and Grade 5 learners about puberty and the importance of personal hygiene.

The event took place at the school hall on Friday, 1 September 2023. It was also Jacobs’s last day at the school as her PYEI contract was soon coming to an end and she secure another job opportunity.

“The sanitary products drive is a project very close to my heart. I know what it feels like to not always get what you need. Seeing the joy and the smiles on the learners’ faces made it all worth it. I appreciate all the donations received and the opportunity to do the handover.”

Lynn Brown, the PYEI district coordinator, thanked Jacobs for the successful initiative. “Ms Jacobs took it upon herself to make a difference at her school, in the lives of learners and in the community. We wish Ms Jacobs well in her future endeavours.”
