Minister Anroux Marais' speech at South African Pool Championship
Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais
South African Pool Championship
7 October 2018
Good morning, molweni nonke, goeiemôre,
It is indeed a great pleasure to welcome all participants, both local and from across the country, to the 2018 South African Pool Championship in our beautiful Cape Winelands district this morning.
The 2018 South African Pool Championship will undoubtedly make a meaningful contribution to the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport’s mission to encourage excellence and inclusiveness in sport and culture through the effective, efficient and sustainable use of our resources, and through creative partnerships with others. In moving to excellence, we will create the conditions for access and mass participation, talent identification and skills development.
Sporting events, such as this Championship, enable a socially inclusive, creative, active and connected Western Cape. It also affords visitors the opportunity to witness first-hand the splendor the Western Cape has to offer, while creating lifelong friendships with a healthy dose of competition and at the same time contributes to sport tourism in the area and its surroundings.
I encourage all participants to enjoy the championship. Remember as Alan Armstrong once said, “Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character.” I sincerely thank each one who had a hand in the success of this Championship hosted in the Western Cape. We wish you well in your next competition and continued prosperity in being the positive role models to your fellow youth as you lead healthy lifestyles while increasing wellness through participation and excelling in the code.
I thank you.
