Condolences on passing of champion for equal participation in sport
Frank van der Horst, the former President of the South African Council on Sport (SACOS), sadly passed away on Monday, 8 July 2024. As the leader of SACOS, Frank fought tirelessly during the apartheid years to achieve non-segregated sport in South Africa. He was outspoken and instrumental in organising sporting events where all South Africans could take part, especially from 1982 to 1988, before the first democratic elections. Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, said, “Frank was an important leader who helped bring our country to where we are now – where sport brings everyone together through shared emotions and passion for the game. It is because of people like Frank who fought for non-segregated sport in South Africa that we are now able to truly see all athletes reach their potential on world stages. We owe him tremendous gratitude for all that he did for sport in our country.” We extend our deepest condolences to Frank’s family, friends, and all those who knew him.
