Boost for sport development: WCG partners with Northlink College

Today, 30 August 2024, the Western Cape Government (WCG) signed a Partnership Agreement with Northlink College, enabling students at the TVET College to do practical course work in WCG school sport and recreation programmes.   Participating students will be placed at MOD* Centres, Neighbouring School Centres, and Recreation Centres, where they will be mentored by the programme coaches.   Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, said, “This is a big milestone in our mission to increase access to sport and recreation opportunities for young people. Well done to the teams who have laid the foundations for this partnership. We look forward to welcoming Northlink College students into our programmes.”   Minister Mackenzie added, “We are working at various levels to revitalise school sport, because it ignites confidence, passion and potential in children. It sets them up to succeed. By developing collaborative relationships in the sports ecosystem – between government, civil society and the private sector – we can share resources and broaden our impact.”   Principal and CEO of Northlink College, Mr Xolelo Brian Phike, said, “This partnership will create meaningful opportunities for our students to learn new skills and make a difference in communities through the school sport programme.”   This is the first in a series of partnerships that the WCG’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is currently formalising with various organisations, including Chrysalis Academy, Waves for Change, and Amandla EduFootball, among others.   *MOD = Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth
