Bitterfontein, a small town approximately 380 km from Cape Town, takes its name from the bitter, brackish fountain which is still its main source of water. The town also boasts the southern hemisphere’s first water desalination plant, which has recently linked up with the nearby village of Rietpoort, to supply them with valuable Blue Drop status drinking water.
